Anime search says “no match”? 9 fixes that work
An anime scene search either nails it or comes back empty. When it is empty or the similarity is low, one of these nine causes is almost always to blame.

First: understand the similarity score
Every result has a similarity percentage. Around 90% or higher is almost always the right scene. Below that, the engine found something only loosely similar — treat it as a hint, and check the other candidates.
The 9 fixes
- Uncrop it. A tight crop of one face carries little information. Use the full frame.
- Remove overlays. Meme text, captions, stickers, and watermarks over the picture all lower similarity.
- Un-mirror it. Edits are often flipped horizontally to dodge copyright filters. Flip it back.
- Undo filters. Heavy colour grading, glow, or sharpening moves the image away from the original frame.
- Try a neighbouring frame. Fast motion and transitions blur frames; a moment a second earlier or later can match perfectly.
- Avoid opening and ending sequences. OPs and EDs repeat across many episodes, so the episode may be ambiguous — the title will still be right.
- Check it is from the anime. Fan art, manga panels, official posters, and AI-generated images are not in a scene index — use SauceNAO for those.
- Use the original, not a re-upload. Screenshots of screenshots lose detail. Find the highest-quality copy you can.
- Wait and retry if you hit the limit. Searches run on the free public trace.moe API, which has a fair-use limit. If you see a quota message, try again shortly.
Still nothing?
Some titles — very new episodes, very obscure releases, or non-Japanese animation — may not be indexed yet. In that case, try an art search engine or ask a community such as r/whatanime on Reddit, which is good at identifying obscure scenes.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my anime screenshot have low similarity?
Usually because it is cropped, mirrored, filtered, covered in text, or not actually a frame from the anime. Fixing those usually raises the similarity above 90%.
Why is the episode wrong but the anime right?
Openings, endings, and recap scenes reuse the same frames across episodes, so the engine may pick a different episode containing the identical frame.
Does it work with fan art?
No — scene search only matches frames from episodes and movies. Use SauceNAO or ascii2d for fan art.
