How to find an anime from a screenshot

You have one frame and no idea what show it is from. Here is the fastest way to get the anime's name, the episode, and the exact moment — plus what to do when the first try fails.

By Tahir Nazir · Updated

The 3-step method

  1. Get a clean frame. Screenshot the scene at full size. If it is a video, pause on a moment without captions or stickers.
  2. Run an anime scene search. Open AniTrace and drop, paste, or upload the image — or paste its URL.
  3. Confirm with the preview. Watch the short clip next to the result. If it is the same scene, you have your answer: title, episode, and timestamp.

That is it for most screenshots. The rest of this guide covers what to do with tricky images.

Pick the right tool for the type of image

The single biggest mistake is using the wrong kind of search engine. Anime scene search and anime art search are different tools:

How to read the result

  • Similarity — about 90% or higher is almost always correct. Below that, treat it as a guess.
  • Timestamp — when the scene starts in the episode, as HH:MM:SS.
  • Episode — the episode number; movies and OVAs may show none.
  • Other candidates — up to five alternatives, useful when the top result is wrong or when a scene is reused (recaps, openings).

When there is no match

No result usually means the image has drifted too far from the original frame. The quickest fixes:

  • Use a less-cropped version of the image.
  • Remove or avoid text overlays and stickers.
  • Un-mirror the image if it was flipped.
  • Try a frame from a second or two earlier or later.

The complete list is in why anime searches return no match.
